RESET YOUR EYES
ADS is not the tape you used to put on your screen with a dot in the middle - even that assimilated into your view after a while. ADS keeps your perspective from being sucked into the screen. This can be a reticle or something else on screen that enhances what you see. Any object that causes your mind to realize that there’s something foreign on screen will help reset your mind and eyes.

For example, have you ever driven to home, work or the store only to find yourself at your destination, but you can’t remember getting there? Zombie driving. Everyone’s done it. But in that drive, if you saw something out of the ordinary (what your mind is NOT used to seeing), it would snap you out of the haze and reset your focus and perception.

REPLAYABILITY
I used to play Fortnite all the time - probably for 3yrs straight. When the new COD hit the shelves, I jumped over there and never wanted to return to Fortnite. As I continued to work on ADS and I saw how it changed my perception of the guns, I knew I had to test it out in Fortnite. Not only were they usable, they were actually enjoyable! I’ve continued to play both COD and Fornite on a pretty even and consistent basis since.
This was my personal experience, but as I started sharing the app with close friends they also found themselves branching out. ADS allowed them to adjust what they were seeing on-screen just enough that they realized the game mechanics mattered much less.
EXAMPLE
I wrote a Star Wars game for the iPhone in 2009 for Lucas Film. While developing the Trench logic and flight control, I used a view of the X-wing cockpit that I felt looked good. For months I enjoyed testing and how the controls and flight felt. When I received the final artwork for the cockpit, I was completely disappointed. It was flat, and the angles of the window frames gave you the sensation that you were flying a flat-nosed X-wing. Nothing had changed except the artwork inside the cockpit. This small peripheral change was enough to affect my ability to fly the X-wing through the trench, even after working on it for months.
